(Part 1 of 3) I filled up a watercolor notebook of of cool stuff I saw in the Northwest. I’ll post them all here — even the ones that stink.

Mission: Complete

The Pacific Northwest is pretty beautiful, so I’m glad we caught a Central Valley sunset to remind me why we were coming home.

After leaving Olympia, we spent a rainy afternoon walking down Mississippi Street in Portland. From there we spent a couple of nights in Eugene with some old family friends. We took an Animal House tour of the University of Oregon and got some free schwag from their campus radio, KWVA.

We raced through the mountains of southern Oregon and all the way to Davis, just in time to see our Seattle buddy Shelby Turner and his band Huge Cookies play at Delta of Venus. I couldn’t imagine a better homecoming.

Our trip by the numbers
Shows attended: 31 + 2 festivals
Bands seen: 134
Ian’s top bike speed: 45 mph
Money to keep my 18-year-old Volvo running, not including gas: $700

Thanks for reading, everyone. See you on the next adventure!

Serendipitous Sister Cities

Someone told us Olympia is the city of serendipity. For example, at the show at Grandma’s House tonight:

1) We rejoined two friends from Sacramento, who we actually first met up here even though we went to all the same shows back home, who I didn’t even know were back in town.

2) While talking to them about Sacramento shows, a KDVS sticker flashed by my eyes, on the back of an autoharp belonging to someone who played at my Davis house.

3) Not one but two of the bands (World History and Twig Palace) tonight had played at my house, and I didn’t even remember that they had played together until someone from the third band (Little Teeth) yelled out, “Yeah, I saw that tour! Davis, California!”

4) So, there were seven people at this show tonight who had been to my house, not even counting Ian and me.

5) We’re going to see Little Teeth again in Sacramento in less than a week, World History in March, and Twig Palace sometime too I hope!

So you can see how this has been a pretty comfy place to hang out. We’re all connected! It’s all the same scene!
